HACCP Training for Packaging Manufacturers

Packaging manufacturers supplying food producers and manufacturers are subject to regulatory and retailer scrutiny.

Why HACCP ?

Although not food, packaging materials come into direct contact with food products — making contamination control and hazard analysis critical. The HACCP principles form the foundation of many packaging audit standards and provide a clear framework for risk management.

At RI Training, we provide HACCP training tailored specifically for industrial and food-related packaging operations to control the potential risks that can occur as a result of:

  • Physical contamination (plastic, metal)
  • Chemical contamination (residues, ink etc)
  • Microbial contamination from hygiene failures during manufacture and transport

Packaging suppliers to food and drink businesses can be audited under:

  • BRCGS standards
  • Retailer technical audits
  • ISO 9001 quality systems
  • Customer-specific hygiene codes

HACCP provides a clear, documented framework for:

  • Identifying potential hazards
  • Establishing critical control points
  • Demonstrating due diligence
  • Strengthening compliance systems
  • Supporting audit readiness

Who this training is for

This training is suitable for manufacturers of packaging products (e.g., plastic, cardboard, paper, and flexible film), as well as labelling companies. More specifically, it is targeted at those likely to be involved in the development and implementation of HACCP systems.

What we offer

Unlike generic food-based HACCP, our programmes are adapted to packaging production environments. We offer two courses to support HACCP.

HACCP developer training:  This training is for those involved in creating or maintaining HACCP plans.  It is a two-day training programme that introduces HACCP principles in the context of laundry production and the products being manufactured, and seamlessly links to other quality management systems in operation, e.g., ISO 9001. By the end of the two-day course, all the fundamental requirements of HACCP will have been fully explored, and draft HACCP plans created.

HACCP awareness training: This training is for those involved in HACCP as part of their routine work. This one-day training programme introduces HACCP in the context of the packaging manufacturer’s HACCP plans. This training aims to provide HACCP awareness essential to successful HACCP implementation.

Certification can be achieved following successful completion of the course assessment. The assessment route can be either via the RSPH if a Food-based HACCP certificate is required, or via RI’s own assessment, which leads to a non-food HACCP certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HACCP legally required by packaging manufacturers?

HACCP is not a direct legal requirement for laundries; however, structured hazard analysis and documented control systems are often expected during audits, particularly where products enter the food supply chains. Packaging manufacturers must comply with:

Retained EU Framework Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 (food contact materials) and Good Manufacturing Practice Regulation (EC) 2023/2006

Can HACCP integrate with existing quality management systems?

Yes. HACCP aligns well with ISO 9001 and retailer technical standards.

Is this suitable for small producers?

Yes. The programme can be scaled to suit small and medium-sized operations.
